Lawrence Energy Center has 11 groundwater monitoring wells, 11 of which have been polluted above federal advisory levels based on samples collected between August 16, 2016 and September 04, 2019. Groundwater at this site contains unsafe levels of lithium, sulfate, radium, arsenic, molybdenum, boron and fluoride.
Site descriptionLawrence Energy Center is a 484-MW coal-fired plant with two active units located in Lawrence, Kansas in Douglas County owned by Evergy Kansas Central. Two additional coal-fired units were retired in 2000 and 2015, respectively. The remaining two units are expected to be retired by the end of 2023. The plant was first built in 1952. The Landfill is 57.3 acres in size. The Area 2 and 3 Ponds were proposed to be closed by April 17, 2018. Ponds 2-501 and 2-502 have clay liners. All the ponds will be excavated and removed, including liners. The center also holds an Area 4 pond.
