Somerset Generating Station has 13 groundwater monitoring wells, 13 of which have been polluted above federal advisory levels based on samples collected between July 15, 2014 and August 06, 2019. Groundwater at this site contains unsafe levels of sulfate, boron, arsenic, thallium, radium, fluoride and selenium.

Site description

Somerset Generating Station, owned by Somerset Operating Company, is in Barker, New York, on the shores of Lake Ontario. First commissioned in 1984, the plant was closed in 2020. Its single coal-fired unit had a total capacity of 685 MW. The site has two units regulated under the CCR rule, the Solid Waste Disposal Area and the Sludge Stabilization Basin.
