Red Hills Operation Generating Facility has 16 groundwater monitoring wells, 13 of which have been polluted above federal advisory levels based on samples collected between July 26, 2016 and September 11, 2019. Groundwater at this site contains unsafe levels of cobalt, lithium, radium, sulfate, molybdenum and beryllium.

Site description

Choctaw Generating LLLP’s Red Hills Operation Generating Facility is in Ackerman, Mississippi just north of the Tombigbee National Forest in Choctaw County. Plant Red Hills began operations in 2001 with their singular coal-fired unit with a generating capacity of 514-MW. Red Hills also operates an active, onsite Ash Management Unit that spans 90 acres in total. Choctaw Generating LLLP plans to close or retire the coal-fired unit. Red Hills Ash Management Unit is regulated under the CCR rule.
