Site description

Allete Incorporated’s Taconite Harbor Energy Center is in Cook County, Minnesota along the shore of Lake Superior. Plant Taconite Harbor commenced operations in 1957 and operated three coal-fired units with a combined generating capacity of 225-MW. One unit was retired in 2015, while the remaining two were idled in 2016 and scheduled to be retired in 2020, though the company has yet to formally announce its retirement. The singular CCR Landfill at Plant Taconite has also been retired and, as of 2016, no longer accepts CCR material. The CCR Landfill is still regulated under the CCR rule.

You can find the industry-reported data here. For more information about the Taconite Harbor Energy Center, see EIP's 2019 National Coal Ash Report.
