Milton R. Young Station has 8 groundwater monitoring wells, 8 of which have been polluted above federal advisory levels based on samples collected between April 05, 2016 and September 05, 2019. Groundwater at this site contains unsafe levels of lithium, arsenic, radium, boron and molybdenum.

Site description

Minnkota Power Cooperative’s Milton R. Young Station is located 5 miles southeast of the town Center, North Dakota in Oliver County. It was first operational in 1970 and consists of two coal-fired units with a net capacity of 705-MW. The second unit is owned by Square Butt Electric Cooperative and is currently pursuing a carbon capture project that will capture up to 90% of its emissions. Coal ash is disposed of in three cells located southwest of the facility. Cell 1 is a landfill that was closed prior to October 2015, therefore it is not regulated under the CCR rule. Landfill Cell 2 and Surface Impoundment Cell 3 are required to comply with the provisions of the CCR rule.
