Site descriptionMinnkota Power Cooperative’s Milton R. Young Station is located 5 miles southeast of the town Center, North Dakota in Oliver County. It was first operational in 1970 and consists of two coal-fired units with a net capacity of 705-MW. The second unit is owned by Square Butt Electric Cooperative and is currently pursuing a carbon capture project that will capture up to 90% of its emissions. Coal ash is disposed of in three cells located southwest of the facility. Cell 1 is a landfill that was closed prior to October 2015, therefore it is not regulated under the CCR rule. Landfill Cell 2 and Surface Impoundment Cell 3 are required to comply with the provisions of the CCR rule.
